Atlas Unrequired

You’ve probably guessed that this one is about redundancy. When I was 54 I was made redundant from my job in Media IT. Since then I have been unable to find another position. Given that the age for retirement will be 70 by the time I’m 65 I felt the need to vent my frustration through this sculpture. It depicts Atlas, now redundant by dint of the fact that he would be a considerable hazard to air and shipping routes. His muscles and joints are fused into the ricture that was required when he supported our world on his shoulders.
He now crouches, somewhere in a god’s retirement home, eyed only occasionally by Marvel comics but otherwise forgotten by those who relied on him for their very existence.
